The IAC gets its second accreditation as a Severo Ochoa center of excellence

On February 2nd Rafael Rebolo, Director of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) received the Severo Ochoa Award, 2015, which is the second recognition of the scientific and innovative excellence of this research centre at International level. The award ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Economy and Competitivity in Madrid, and was presided over by Carmen Vela, Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation. Representatives of the 15 Spanish research centres and research units which had won, respectively, the Severo Ochoa and the María de Maeztu awards were present. The IAC has renewed its award for excellence for another four years, which means that it will receive one million euros per year during this period.

The Ministry of Economy and Competitivity announced on 11th October last year the 11 centres and 4 units which had won the award this time. The winners had been selected for their track records during the past five years and for their strategic programmes for 2016-2019 following a rigorous evaluation in which 115 researchers at top international level and of recognized prestige took part.
