Information about the island of La Palma

La Palma landscape - Photo by Pilar FernándezThe island of La Palma is situated in the north-east of the Canary Islands archipelago, several hundred kilometres from the coast of north-east Africa. It is known as La Isla Bonita (The Beautiful Island) because of its outstanding natural beauty.

La Palma is one of the smaller Canary Islands, with a surface area of 706 square kilometres and a population of just 85,000. It climbs sharply from sea level to an altitude of over 2000 m in the interior. The highest point of the island is the Roque de los Muchachos (2,426m), where the observatory is situated.

La Palma has a sunny climate with mild temperatures all year round. At sea level average temperatures range between 15ºC in January to 22ºC in August. Rainfall varies considerably with the seasons - there is virtually no rain from June to August, with most rain falling in November.
