OSIRIS - Images - Collimator

The first manufacturing phase of the OSIRIS Collimator Mirror (ie rectangular external cut and machining of all the cells in the rear surface) is now finished with success. The Collimator Subsystem consists of the Collimator Mirror, the Positioning Mechanism to tilt the mirror and the Cell that supports the system an allows to attach it to the instrument mechanical structure. Main components of the cell are the triangular holder that supports the mirror and the large triangular framework that is isostatically attached to the OSIRIS Support Structure using Serurier trusses.

You will find here attached somes pictures of the mirror. The manufacturing company is now starting the second manufacturing phase (i.e. the aspherical grinding of the optical surface, which is currently flat).

Here you can see the collimator mirror holder and the triangular framework structure at the factory (NTE). The picture was taken during the first week of September 2003. Components are made on steel and they are finished except for black painting. Green colour is the primer applied before paint. A protective layer has been applied on clean interface surfaces to avoid oxidization.
