Travel information:

The Canary Islands are rather remote from Europe, however their connection by air is extremely good. Tenerife is regularly connected to 16 foreign airports. Several times a day there are connections to the major Spanish cities, and it has direct charter flights with more than 112 foreign cities!

Tenerife has two airports. One on the north side (Tenerife Norte, TFN, also known as "Aeropuerto de Los Rodeos") and the other one on the south of the island (Tenerife Sur, TFS, also known as "Aeropuerto Reina Sofia"). The airport code to search for connections to both airports is TCI.

In most cases Madrid, Barajas airport, will be used as transfer when coming from non-European countries. There are daily flights connecting worldwide locations and Madrid. Madrid-Tenerife is a 2.5 hour flight operated by Iberia or other Spanish regular airlines (Spanair, Air Europe) and costs not over 40,000 ptas but depends highly on early booking and offers. Frequent connections are also operated through Barcelona for similar prices.

Seen the abundant number of charter flights to Tenerife from all over Europe, connections through any other major European airport can be considered.

TFN is only connected to Spanish cities, though, whereas TFS is a national as well as an international airport. Both have good connections for ground transportation. Please consult our Web pages for maps of the island. TFN is more convenient. It is rather close to Puerto de la Cruz and coming from Madrid it has more frequent connections.

Puerto de la Cruz lies 30 km from TFN and 90 km from TFS, with a motor-way link covering the full journey in both cases and both airports.

Online information about flights arriving at or departing from Madrid, Barcelona and Tenerife South (TFS) airports can be obtained at:

Local transport:

Transportation on Tenerife relies mainly on the public bus company TITSA (green buses) and taxis. Buses run frequently and cheaply. Taxis are inexpensive compared to European standards. The renting of a car may also be an alternative, since car rentals in Tenerife are rather cheap (about 25000-35000 Ptas a week for a small car). In the airports, the booths of 'Auto Reisen' (cheapest) or 'Cicar' offer generally the best rates. Reservations are recommended but not necessary; they can be made at:

If you are arriving at TFN-Los Rodeos:

Buses for Puerto de la Cruz leave every 30 min (line 102: Santa Cruz-Puerto de la Cruz: but ask the driver "Puerto?" as you might easily take the wrong way, so to Santa Cruz!). TFN-Puerto de la Cruz bus station costs about 375 pesetas. A taxi costs about 4,000 pesetas.

If you are arriving at TFS-Reina Sofia:

You can either catch a taxi (about 10,000 pesetas), or a bus.
Bus services are as follows:

  1. TFS to Puerto de la Cruz direct service (line 340). Departure times: 9:45, 14:00, 20:00 and 23:00. Price of one way ticket: 1,075 pesetas.
  2. TFS to Santa Cruz de Tenerife bus terminal (line 341). Departure times: 06:50, 07:50, 08:50, 09:30, 10:30, 11:30, 12:10, 13:10, 14:10, 14:50, 15:50, 16:50, 17:30, 18:30, 19:30, 20:10, 21:10, 22:10, 22:50, 23:45 and 1:30. Price of one way ticket: 690 pesetas.

  3. Then take the bus:
Santa Cruz de Tenerife bus terminal to Puerto de la Cruz (line 102). Departure times: every 30 min until 21:15. Additionally 22:30 and 24:00. Price of one way ticket: 470 pesetas.
NOTE: There is an (uphill) walk from the bus terminal in Puerto de la Cruz to the hotels. For this reason we recommend a taxi (either from the airports, or from the bus terminal in Puerto de la Cruz). A taxi from the bus terminal in Puerto de la Cruz to the hotels will cost about 500 pesetas.

Changing money:

There is a bank within the international arrivals lounge at the TFS Airport, it operates from Monday to Friday from 8:30h to 13:30h and an exchange desk from 7:00h to 24:00h. Currency exchange is also possible at TFN: by bank (Monday to Friday from 08:30h - 13:30h, or by exchange desk (10:00h to 14:00h and from 18:00h to 22:00h). Traveling through Madrid or Barcelona you will find the exchange bureau opens round the clock. Note that "exchange agencies" have lower exchange rates, or hidden costs even if they advertise as not doing such!, than the regular banks.

Many banks can be found in Puerto de la Cruz, they open Monday to Friday from 9:00h to 13:00h. Credit cards are widely accepted in Spain (restaurants, hotels, etc.).

An abundant number of ATM or cash dispensers for a variety of cards for instant cash can be found on every street-corner: VISA, Mastercard, Cirrus, Maestro, AMEX, etc. There is a small charge involved (approx. 4%).

Weather and climate:

Puerto de la Cruz is on the north coast of the island of Tenerife. The island is dominated by the 3,718 m peak of Teide to the south. There is a maritime climate which means that the temperature and weather on the coast can be warm and pleasant even for bathing. However, the weather during January is often influenced by depressions causing windy chilly days during which rainfall is common. So please make sure that you have suitable clothing with you. If you plan to go up Teide's national parc or the observatory, please be prepared to very low temperatures, even when it looks nice and sunny!

More detailed local information, what to see and where to eat, will be provided in the registration package.
