ULL student working in a "Práctica de Empresa" internship

Following the practice started two years ago, this year too the SIE will have a ULL student in a "Práctica de Empresa" internship. This student, during three weeks (a time period a bit too short we believe) will research the various options available when submitting HTCondor jobs, in particular focusing on finding the way to prepare and submit jobs in order to get optimal executions. For instance, should I send a few long jobs or many short jobs (what is the best "execution time window")? Should one transfer my input files to remote machine or use shared areas, and what's the best option for small/medium/large files? Moreover, given the recent installation of the new HTCondor version 8.4.X, is it worth the time to rewrite the "old" submission scripts to take into account the many improvements and simplifications brought about in this new release? While we cannot expect any definitive answers about such questions, we hope at least to collect useful information and provide some tips and guidelines.

SIE's talk in the "Jornadas Técnicas de RedIRIS 2015"

As you have already learnt from the IAC Press Release, the "Jornadas Técnicas de RedIRIS 2015" (RedIRIS Technical Days) took place last week in the Auditorium in Santa Cruz of Tenerife. Your SIE was present too, with an Invited Talk delivered by Antonio Dorta titled "HTCondor en el IAC", within "Sesión 1A: Traslado de servicios a la nube I" (Migration of services to the Cloud I). The video of this talk is available at If you do not have the time to watch it, you can browse the Google Slides.

Acknowledgements for usage of IAC Supercomputing facilities (reminder)

Proper acknowledgement of the usage of the various supercomputing facilities available to IAC users is crucial for securing adequate funds to keep them running and, hopefully, to improve them. All papers that made use of the IAC Supercomputing facilities should include one of the sentence below:
TeideHPC: The author(s) wish to acknowledge the contribution of Teide High-Performance Computing facilities to the results of this research. TeideHPC facilities are provided by the Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables (ITER, SA). URL:
LaPalma Supercomputer: "The author thankfully acknowledges the technical expertise and assistance provided by the Spanish Supercomputing Network (Red Española de Supercomputación), as well as the computer resources used: the LaPalma Supercomputer, located at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias"
HTCondor: "This paper made use of the IAC Supercomputing facility HTCondor (, recently expanded and improved thanks to FEDER funds granted by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, project code IACA13-3E-2493."

Usage statistics for IDL and MATLAB

We have been collecting license usage data for IDL for more than a couple of years, and for MATLAB (and several of its add-on packages as well) since December last year. The MATLAB and the IDL graphs (only internal access) display the number of floating license taken day by day, broken down by month.
