  • Anomalous Circular Polarization Profiles in the He I 1083.0 nm Multiplet from Solar Spicules

We report Stokes vector observations of solar spicules and a prominence in the He I 1083 nm multiplet carried out with the Tenerife Infrared Polarimeter. The observations show linear polarization profiles that are produced by scattering processes in the presence of a magnetic field. After a careful data reduction, we demonstrate the existence of

  • Apparent discordant redshift QSO-galaxy associations

An "exotic" idea proposed by Viktor Ambartsumian was that new galaxies are formed through the ejection from older active galaxies. Galaxies beget galaxies, instead of the standard scenario in which galaxies stem from the evolution of the seeds derived from fluctuations in the initial density field. This idea is in some way contained in the

  • Aql X-1 back in outburst: multi-wavelength observations

On November 1st. RXTE-PCA scans of the Aql region detected X-ray emission consistent with the neutron star transient and atoll source Aql X-1. Further scans and pointed PCA observations show a rising X-ray flux; the most recent flux is about 40 mCrab. Swift observed the field for about 2.5 ksec on November 8th, 2009, and detected a bright X-ray

  • Aql X-1 transition towards the soft (banana) state accompanied by radio/NIR detection

The currently active neutron star transient and atoll source Aql X-1 (Linares et al., ATEL #2288) has begun the transition from the hard (extreme island) state to the soft (banana) state (Rodriguez et al. ATEL #2299). This transition likely began around 2009 Nov 15 (MJD = 55150). The latest RXTE PCA observation (2009 Nov 17, MJD=55152.17+/-0.02, 2

  • Archaeoastronomy: archaeology, topography and celestial landscape - From the Nile to Rapa Nui

Archaeoastronomy is a discipline apparently subject to controversy. The reason for this is that it is situated between astronomy, whose tools it uses; and anthropology, archaeology, and history, the disciplines archaeoastronomy serves and within whose epistemological framework should be integrated. Perhaps for this reason, until recently it has not
