To celebrate March 8th, International Women’s Day, a new chapter of the audiovisual series “Girls who broke a glass ceiling looking at the sky” is being premiered. This project was started in 2017 as part of the initiative “The Return of Henrietta Leavitt, from school to a research career, via the Theatre” by the IAC in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), of the Ministry of Science and Innovation. Its objective is to show to the general public the work of women in science, encouraging young girls to opt for careers in science.
 

Previously the series comprised five chapters which had received 25,000 visualizations in all. It had given an opening to 20 women scientists at the IAC, talking about their experiences, and what inspired them to enter the world of Astrophysics. Lucía González Cuesta, astrophysicist, Susana Delgado Marante, software engineer, Julia de León Cruz, research astrophysicis, and Mary Barreto Cabrera, industrial engineer and technical director of the European Solar Telescope (EST) are participating in this sixth chapter. In addition today we publish in the blog of the IAC (Vía Láctea, s/n) an article narrating the career of the Northern Irish astrophyiscist, Jocelyn Bell Burnell, the woman who discovered the pulsars.

Activities in educational centres

The project “Talk to them: Women in Astronomy”, coordinated by the astrophysicist outreach specialist Nayra Rodríguez Eugenio, continues its work. This initiative gives the possibility for students in Spanish schools, from Infant through Pre-university and professional training, to talk via videoconference to one of the 20 women astrophysicists and engineers who participate voluntarily: personnel of the IAC, of the user institutions of the Canary Observatories (CTA, TNG, OU) and collaborators. This activity began on 11th February, (the International Day of Women and Girls in Science) and until the end of June the schools can register on the following form and agree on a date.

The second edition of “Canary Scientific Women” will be celebrated throughout the school year 2019-2020 in the 70 schools (primary, secondary, and training courses) of the participating islands. In this project, women researchers from various centres of the Archipelago, including the IAC, give presentations in public schools and institutes registered for the project to encourage equality and scientific vocations for women. Those collaborating are the Government of the Canaries, through the Department of Education and Universities (CEU), and the the Area of Scientific Vocations (STEAM), the General Direction of Ordination, Innovation and Quality, the Canary Foundation Observatory of Temisas, and INVEPA (Association of researchers of Las Palmas)
 

Furthermore, the fourh edition of Más Mujer Awards, wich will be celebrated on 12th March in the Paraninfo of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, will award Antonia María Varela Pérez, astrophysicist and Starlight Fundation's director. The scientist will recieve the Mujer Ciencia e Innovación Award.
