Archaeoastronomy in the Muisca Territory.
Juan David Morales

This talk will try to expose a general vision of the archaeoastronomical work which I have made in the Cundiboyacense plateau of Colombia, within the framework of the investigation “Arqueoastronomía en el territorio Muisca.”, developed from 2001 to 2003.
The question that I look for to respond, is if it could have been a system of spatial organization in the cultural geography of the Muisca, and the relation of this with the spatial-temporary dimension of the astronomical cycles and the cosmology.
By doing so I try to demonstrate that the Muiscas used Astronomy to construct their cultural space and that they have left evidence of that by means of the geographical organization of their territory and the astronomical and cosmological features of their culture.
In the investigation I catalogued and study the archaeological sites that Muiscas could have used as sites of astronomical observation. These sites display an astronomical interaction with the sun and the moon that allowed, through the photographic-video registry of diverse astronomical moments of importance, to reconstruct the form in which these places could have worked like “astronomical observatories”.
Also I have studied the calendar and the astronomical and cosmological features of the myths as well as the astronomical instruments they used.
