Detection of companion stars of the pulsar X1822-371 and black hole candidate GX339-4

Map of He and N velocities. Whilst nothing is revealed by He, it was analysis of N emissions that led to the detection of companion star X 1822-371.

Detecting companion stars in these systems has been impossible until now. Thanks to a new technique developed at the IAC, they can now be detected through fluorescent CII/NIII emissions produced by X ray irradiation.
