The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) is participating in the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009) through the following initiatives:

Kepler (IYA2009 Special Task Groups), "100 hours of Astronomy" (IYA2009 Cornerstone Project), and "Astro for Everybody" and "Astronomy on the Streets" (national projects within Spain).

This Group will celebrate the 400th anniversary of Kepler's "Astronomia nova" (which contains the derivation of the First and Second Laws), the cornerstone of modern astronomy.

This proposed Special Session aims is to acknowledge the immense contributions that Kepler made to celestial dynamics, optics and the techniques of numerical calculation.

"Astro for Everybody"

This project aims to make astronomy part of everyday life through spectacular astronomical images "made in Spain" (taken with telescopes located in Spanish territory, at professional observatories, by amatures, private astrophotographers, etc.) and short popular talks that are easy to understand, attractive and lively.

Everyday items will be used: ONCE coupons on the following Saturdays: 10, 17, 24, 31 January; 7, 28 February; 7 and 14 March, 2009) and contents for mobile phones ("themes") and computers (worktops and screen savers) that will be made available to the public from a web portal as free downloads from January onwards. The portal will be advertised by means of a poster to be distributed to all secondary schools and educational institutes throughout Spain. There will also be publicity campaign for all the projects on the Internet.
