The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC, Tenerife), the leading Astrophysical Center in Spain, invites applications for TWO postdoctoral contracts in Astrophysics. Research topics at the IAC (theory, observations and instrumentation) include most areas of astrophysics: cosmology and the structure of the Universe, structure and evolution of galaxies, interstellar matter, structure and evolution of stars, the Sun, solar system, history of the Astronomy, high spatial resolution techniques and atmospheric optics, optical and infrared instrumentation, and astronomical space projects. The IAC also leads the scientific teams responsible for the Day One instruments of the 10.4 m GTC segmented telescope (http://www.gtc.iac.es), as well as their scientific exploitation. The successful candidates will be based at the IAC's headquarters in La Laguna, in a stimulating and keen working environment where front-line astrophysical research is under way. They will be expected to join one or more of the IAC's research groups to fully pursue independent research.

Contract: Applicants who are citizen from countries not belonging to the European Union have to bear in mind that they will not be allowed to sign any contract with the IAC until they have the compulsory documentation required to live and work in Spain (Visa, Living Licence and Exception of the Working Licence) approved.

Remuneration: The gross annual salary is 29.097 Euros, subject to about 33% tax and Social Security deductions. Medical insurance under the Spanish National Health Service is provided for the candidate and includes cover for accompanying partner and children.

Duration: Up to a maximum of three years, subject to annual review.

Doctorate: Applicants must have obtained their PhD in Astrophysics or Physics after 1998. They must have their doctoral certificate at the moment of signing their contract, to take place after the Final Resolution and later than 1st October, 2005.

  • Curriculum Vitae and accreditations of merits the applicant wishes to highlight.
  • Brief report on their research/technical activity and a statement concerning their suitability for the position.
  • PhD Degree (Photocopy).
  • Passport (Photocopy).
  • At least two letters of recommendation must be sent directly from active researchers familiar with the candidates' previous experience, to the Secretariat of the Research Division IAC (electronic format is preferred).
    Applicants who prepared their thesis at the IAC have to present accreditations of Complementary Training at other research centres, as stated under point 2 of the official announcement (this period should be either 1 continuous year or 18 accumulated months).
