OGS

(Optical Ground Station). Optical communication operations with the OGS. The aim of this project is to characterise optical communications from the earth to artificial satellites.

Description

In the framework of an operational contract with the European Space Agency (ESA), the aim of this project is to characterise optical communications from Earth to satellites. The contract is for a number of observation campaigns to establish optical links, principally with the ARTEMIS satellite. Demonstrations have also been carried out for the Japanese Space Agency (NASDA) and a link has been established with the SMART-1 satellite.

In 2005 and 2006 the observation campaigns continued and,the Argon laser was replaced with a more efficient Nd:Yag laser.

The IAC also Maintains the OGS under its contract with the ESA.
