The Optical Coating Laboratory, which is part of the Optical Department, produces fine film deposits on optical surfaces with various applications such as mirrors, antireflective films and interference filters.
The equipment largely consists of a Balzers BAK 600 evaporator with built-in electron gun, which is used to work with high-temperature fusion materials. It has a 600x600x600 mm3 chamber, a 5,200 l/s pump system, a working pressure of <2x10-5mbar and a multiple quartz crystal deposit thickness monitor.
The room within the laboratory that is occupied by the evaporator is a 10,000 class cleanroom. The laboratory also has a gas extraction cabinet to prevent gas inhalation during cleaning.
