Mechanics Department

Designs and develops mechanical systems for astronomical instruments, mainly post-focus, such as visible and infrared cameras, spectrographs and telescopes. The department has experience in calculating and designing mechanisms, structures, cryogenic and  optomechanics systems, and also in numerical modeling, finite element analysis, fabrication techniques, quality control and integrating and testing mechanical systems.

The Department also has a CAD laboratory which houses the most powerful hardware and software applications for mechanical design and analysis (AutoCAD, Pro-Engineer, ANSYS, MathCad and Matlab). The Department also manages the Mechanical Integration and Verification Laboratory and uses the new Large Instrument Integration Room for mounting, characterizing and testing all the mechanical systems in development.
