What is it?
International Heliophysical Year is an initiative taking place throughout 2007. It consists of two separate strands:
- Coordinating science projects put forward from within the different disciplines involved in Earth studies; that is, promoting interdisciplinary research.
- Developing outreach activities at all educational levels to disseminate knowledge about our solar system and the exciting processes of scientific exploration to people all over the world. These activities will include conferences, exhibitions, educational workshops, films and Open Door Days at Astrophysics Centres, Planetariums, Science Museums and so on. It is hoped that the media (radio, television and press) will also be involved.
What does it commemorate?
Throughout 2007, International Heliophysical Year will commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the first such event, which took place in 1957: International Geophysical Year.
This pioneering initiative has now diversified into four strands, so that the 2007 celebration comprises four programmes on different aspects of the Earth sciences:
- International Heliophysical Year

- International Polar Year

- Electronic Geophysical Year
