The IAC (Tenerife, Spain), the leading Astrophysical Center in Spain, invites applications for TWO postdoctoral positions to work within the framework of the research project: "The Solar Atmosphere: Computation and Observation" (AYA2007-66502). The positions will be financed with funds from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. The duration of the appointments will be TWO years and ONE year, respectively.

The IAC hosts a large and very active solar group, covering theory (magnetohydrodynamics, radiation transfer, spectropolarimetry), observation and instrument building. Our group is developing 3D numerical models of dynamical processes in the solar atmosphere and convection zone. We are interested in the magnetohydrodynamical and/or radiation aspects of state-of-the-art numerical simulations and also in their diagnostic capabilities for comparison with observations in the visible, EUV and X-Rays. We are primarily looking for a researcher specialized in theory and numerical modelling in one of the fields mentioned above. Yet, candidates with an observational background will also be considered.

Our team is a leading member of the SOLAIRE European Network. The appointed post-docs will thus benefit from the  Solaire network research environment (http://www.solairenetwork.net/research.php), which has the explicit aim of fostering research collaboration among its participant institutions (http://www.solairenetwork.net/institutions.php) and its five collaborative work packages (http://www.solairenetwork.net/research.php?op1=1). The activities (http://www.solairenetwork.net/activities.php) of the network include network meetings, postgraduate schools and complementary-skills courses.

Tasks:

The successful candidates must be active in one or more of the following general fields:

  • Numerical simulation of (magneto)hydrodynamical processes in the Sun;
  • Magnetic connectivity between the photosphere, chromosphere and corona;
  • Radiation hydrodynamics of the solar atmosphere.

Doctorate: Applicants must have a PhD in Astrophysics or Physics and the doctoral certificate at the moment of starting their appointment .

NOTE: Applicants who prepared their thesis at the IAC must present written evidence of having spent one continuous year, or 18 accumulated months, in other research institutes.

Remuneration: The gross annual salary is 33.422,54 per annum, subject to up to 20% tax and Social Security deductions. Medical insurance under the Spanish National Health Service will be provided, and will also cover your accompanying partner and children (if relevant).

DurationThe duration of the appointments will be 2 years and 1 year, respectively.

Non-UE citizens: If you are citizen of a country not belonging to the European Union, you are not allowed to sign any contract with the IAC until you obtain the compulsory documentation required to live and work in Spain (Visa, Residence Permit, Work Permit Waiver). Please contact the Spanish consulate in your country for details.

Compulsory documentation to submit:

  • The Application Form: WORD or PDF;
  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • Brief statement of research interests and a covering letter telling us about the skills you can bring to the job (statement of suitability);
  • Merits you wish to be taken into account during the process of selection;
  • A photocopy of your PhD Degree or certificate (not compulsory at the moment of submitting your application, but yes at the moment of signing the contract, if resulting the successful candidate);
  • At least two letters of recommendation must be sent (electronic submission preferred); directly by researchers or professionals familiar with your work, to the Secretariat of the IAC's Research Division: secinv@iac.es
  • Applicants who prepared their thesis at the IAC must present written evidence of having spent one continuous year, or 18 accumulated months, in other research institutes.
Applications must be sent, electronic submission preferred, to the Secretariat of the Research Division, secinv@iac.es.  Applications may also be sent by post, however, applications received after the deadline cannot be accepted, unless they are post-stamped, on the application form, by the postal office, before the deadline.  Please note that the stamp on the envelope is not valid. Postal address: Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, C/ Via Láctea s/n, E-38205 La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain. Questions about the position are encouraged and can be addressed to Prof. Fernando Moreno-Insertis (fmi at iac.es)

Details of the evaluation and selection process for this position can be found in the official announcement (Spanish version only).
