The IAC develops much of the technology used for its research programmes in-house (see Technological Development Projects). The Technology Division is responsible for designing, developing and building the instruments needed for astrophysical observation.

The IAC has put a great deal of effort into developing the technology to design and build a large diameter telescope (Gran Telescopio CANARIAS), which has been built at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos. A public company, GRANTECAN S.A was specially set up for this purpose.

The Technology Division also offers the following services on request:

• Technological support from the Area's workshops and laboratories.
• Technical advice.
• Visits to the Technology Division.
• Use of installations and loan of equipment.
• Other requests.
