There are stronger links between the arts and science than those that are usually perceived. In fact, the stars, like fashion, have different shapes, sizes, colors and patterns. Based on this idea and convinced of the great potential of the performing arts as a resource for science outreach, the  Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) has organized, under the guidance of astronomer Tariq Shahbaz and in collaboration with the School of Art and Design (SAD) "Fernando Estévez", an event that links Astronomy with Fashion. In this way, art and science come together to provide a place for the creations of innovative young designers, that will be presented to the public and subject to the assessment of a jury on Friday, June 5, at 21 pm, opposite the church of the Immaculate Conception San Cristobal de La Laguna, Tenerife.

This fashion show inspired by Astronomy and the Cosmos and presented by the students of SAD will be hosted by IAC astrophysicist Antonia Maria Varela in collaboration with the characters of the comedian Juan Luis Calero. The project has the support of the collective “Tenerife Moda", the modelling agency “Quecapricho Olé", the beauty center “Nuevo Stylo e Imagen", the Town Hall of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, the Ministry of Education, Universities and Sustainability of the Canary Islands, and funding from the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology – Ministry of Economy and Finance (FECYT).

Competition  “Wear the stars”

In the framework of the project "Cosmic Fashion" and with the aim of promoting science and technology to school children, we have also organized a fun and informative online drawing competition called “Wear the stars”. Until May 25, 2015, children between 12 and 16 years old can participate. Make a sketch on a piece of paper (A4 size) using any technique you want (paintings, watercolors, crayons, etc.) in which the concepts “Astronomy and Fashion” are present. The sketch should be sent using the form on the project website. There will be two winners, a boy and a girl, who will each receive a garment with their designs that will be presented on June 5 during the "Cosmic Fashion" event.
