Cooperation agreement between the University of La Laguna and the IAC

The seed of the IAC originated at the University of La Laguna (ULL), and both institutions maintain close ties through a solid collaboration agreement. This agreement stipulates that members of the Department of Astrophysics at the ULL become IAC researchers automatically, and vice versa, thereby making both institutions equally responsible for both teaching and research in astrophysics at the ULL.

Teaching

The Postgraduate Training Division at IAC and the Department of Astrophysics at ULL have a solid world-class reputation for research and teaching excellence. In all the courses in Physics and in Mathematics at ULL you will have the opportunity to learn from leading researchers in a wide range of fields:

  • Degree in Physics and Degree in Mathematics (4-year, 240 ECTS, MPhys)

The Department of Astrophysics plays a prominent role in the Degree in Physics. Our staff is involved in essential core and optional modules in all four years. In the Degree in Mathematics the Department is in charge of the 'core physics' modules, so the students can develop an understanding of basic Physics.

  • Master’s Degree in Astrophysics (1.5-year, 90 ECTS, MSc)

Our flagship postgraduate degree offers a wide range of modules and three specialisation pathways. The 'laboratory' modules at Teide Observatory in Tenerife and Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma teach the essential skills of observational astrophysics. In the final year, you will work on a research project under the supervision of IAC staff in a professional environment, with full access to the IAC facilities.

  • International

Every year we welcome a significant number of Erasmus students from other European countries. Further, the Department of Astrophysics has well-established teaching collaboration agreements with other European departments and universities. Some of these departments include group projects at our observatories as part of the training they offer.

PhD opportunities

  • Resident Astrophysicist contracts

Every year the IAC offers attractive PhD fellowships for young university graduates, preferably with a solid background in Physics (or, occasionally, Mathematics or Engineering). These fixed-term contracts are renewable annually up to a maximum of four years.

  • International PhD scholarships

The IAC also offers grants to do a PhD in European countries (International Scholarships) with observing facilities in our observatories.
