On Friday night, 15 February, asteroid 2012 DA14 will pass very close to our planet. This proximity, however, must be seen on an astronomical scale, for, in reality, this celestial object with a diameter between 40 and 50 metres will pass some 27,700 kilometres above the surface of the Earth at a speed close to 28,000 kilometres an hour.
