The EU-funded EDUCADO project (Exploring the Deep Universe by Computational Analysis of Data from Observations) at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) is organising a two-night astronomical observation school providing hands-on research training for early-stage researchers in astronomy and computer science.

The program will convene 15 doctoral candidates from across Europe for an immersive, interdisciplinary learning experience. Attendees will engage in night time astronomical observations utilizing state-of-the-art telescopic instrumentation, guided data analysis workshops, and collaborative sessions designed to develop critical scientific competencies. They will study and witness the complete astronomical observing process, as performed with the Canary Islands’ top telescopes, the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) and the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC or GRANTECAN)).

This training initiative reflects EDUCADO’s overarching mission to cultivate a dynamic research and training environment that empowers the next generation of scientists to contribute meaningfully to sustainable scientific advancement. The observation school aims not only to enhance the technical and analytical skills of participants but also to encourage cross-cultural collaboration and foster professional networking within the international research community.

Dr. Johan Knapen, Principal Investigator of the EDUCADO Project, commented: "Our aim is to give young researchers the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a top-level professional observational setting. Through this school, they will gain practical experience and develop the skills needed to navigate the realities of scientific research with confidence."

The EDUCADO Project represents a consortium of academic institutions, research centres, and industry stakeholders dedicated to promoting open, inclusive, and application-oriented approaches in astronomy and computer science.
