Exploring the Universe, a course on Astronomy for Secondary School teachers has started

This morning at the headquarters of the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a course on astronomy Exploring the Universe began. It is organized by the National Institute of Educational Technology and Teacher Training (INTEF), the UIMP, and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC). From today until next Friday, July 14th, the participating teachers will have the chance to bring up to date their knowledge of subjects related to astrophysics and its associated technology, so that they can incorporate this into secondary education curricula.

Just as in the previous edition, the course will consist of two lectures per day, given by experts in each of the areas of astrophysics in which the IAc is involved (the Sun, the Solar System and Exoplanets, Stars, Galaxies, and Cosmology) and a panel discussion, as well as visits to the IAC Headquarters, to the Museum of Science and the Cosmos, of Museums of Tenerife, to the Teide Observatory and, as an option, to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. There will also be workshops on astrophotography and on daytime and night-time observation of the sky with professional and amateur telescopes.

    An international research team, led from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) and the University of La Laguna (ULL) together with a group of Italian universities, has confirmed a new method for finding protoclusters of galaxies, the largest structures in the early universe. These progenitors of present-day clusters of galaxies played an essential role in the evolution of the universe, but are not easy to find. This study shows that a specific type of galaxies, those which emit radiation at submillimetre wavelengths, are very good indicators of the presence of distant protoclusters
