A total of 14 countries have so far signed up to the Spanish Presidency Declaration of Tenerife, an initiative promoted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation within the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which was presented during the "Global Dimension and Sustainability of Research Infrastructures" Conference. This event took place on 25 and 26 September at the IACTEC building managed by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) in the Science and Technology Park of Tenerife (La Laguna).
Other highlights of the Declaration include the particular capacity of these infrastructures to foster Open Science policies at all levels: institutional, national and European, as well as the promotion of collaboration of European Infrastructures with their counterparts around the world. It also refers to the environmental challenges facing societies and advocates reducing the carbon footprint and the environmental footprint associated with the energy and resource consumption of Infrastructures, increasing and prioritising the use of renewable energy sources and reducing energy consumption.
The European Commission will adhere to the Declaration in the coming days and it is expected that the vast majority of member states will follow suit.
The conference "Global Dimension and Sustainability of Research Infrastructures", in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), brought together the main national and European actors from R&D&I organisations and bodies, such as Raquel Yotti, Secretary General for Research at the Ministry of Science and Innovation, Gonzalo Arévalo, Director General for Research Planning at the Ministry of Science and Innovation, Michael Arentoft, Head of the Open Science and Research Infrastructures Unit at the Directorate General for Research and Innovation, among others. Migdalia Machín Tavío, Councillor for Universities, Science, Innovation, Culture and Heritage in the Canary Islands, Rosa Dávila, President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rafael Rebolo, Director of the IAC, and Casiana Muñoz-Tuñón, Deputy Director of the IAC, also participated.
