Today, “International Women’s Day” we are publishing a new monographic edition of the IAC’s Paralajesmagazine, featuring on its cover Henrietta Leavitt, the US astronomer who, at the beginning 20th century, invented a new method to measure distances in the Universe.

In this edition Paralajes pays tribute to women astronomers, strengthening IAC’s commitment to effective equality between men and women in the workplace, and carrying out the actions foreseen in the framework of the project “The Return of Henrietta Leavitt: from School to a Research Career by way of the Theatre”, an initiative of the IAC in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Economics, Industry, and Competitivity, of the Spanish Government.

In the magazine we recall those women who have contributed to the history of astronomy, but also those women scientists who have recently visited the Institute, prizewinning women researchers, women who have coordinated the various divisions of the Centre, doctoral students, postdocs, women astrophyicists and engineers who add lustre to the IAC and to the Canary Islands Observatories. We also highlight those women involved in recent discoveries, university professors, specialists in informatics, managers, administrators on various levels, popularizers, designers, journalists, etc. who are members of  the IAC. The work of the Institute would be impossible without them.
