Researchers at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) have identified, using the Gran Telescopio de Canarias (GTC) a star which is a key to the formation of the first chemical elements in the Galaxy. The results of this research are published today in the scientific journal The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Científicos del IAC participan en el descubrimiento de un exoplaneta con masa ligeramente superior a Neptuno, que orbita una estrella muy cercana a nuestro Sol. A pesar de situarse en la denominada zona habitable, probablemente carece de superficie sólida y no se espera que exista agua en forma líquida.

The IAC researcher Elena Khomenko has managed to win an European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant, whose purpose is to support projects of world-wide scientific excellence, which will allow her to carry out pioneering research for 5 years on the magnetic activity of the most puzzling region of the solar atmosphere, the chromosphere. This is the second time that the European Research Council has awarded an ERC grant to this astrophysicist, who had previously been given an ERC Starting Grant in 2011.
