  • Probing IGM large-scale flows: warps in galaxies at shells of voids
Context: Hydrodynamical cosmological simulations predict flows of the intergalactic medium along the radial vector of the voids, approximately in the direction of the infall of matter at the early stages of the galaxy formation. Aims: These flows might be detected by analysing the dependence of the warp amplitude on the inclination of the galaxies

  • Probing the early chemical evolution of the Sculptor dSph with purely old stellar tracers
We present the metallicity distribution of a sample of 471 RR Lyrae (RRL) stars in the Sculptor dSph, obtained from the I-band period-luminosity relation. It is the first time that the early chemical evolution of a dwarf galaxy is characterized in such a detailed and quantitative way, using photometric data alone. We find a broad metallicity

  • Probing the nuclear and circumnuclear activity of NGC 1365 in the infrared
We present new far-infrared (70-500 μm) Herschel Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) and Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) imaging observations as well as new mid-IR Gemini/Thermal-Region Camera Spectrograph imaging (8.7 and 18.3 μm) and spectroscopy of the inner Lindblad resonance (ILR) region (R 2.5 kpc) of the

  • Problems and possibilities in fine-tuning of the Cepheid P- L relationship
Factors contributing to the scatter around the ridge-line period-luminosity relationship are listed, followed by a discussion how to eliminate the adverse effects of these factors (mode of pulsation, crossing number, temperature range, reddening, binarity, metallicity, non-linearity of the relationship, blending), in order to reduce the dispersion

  • Prompt Comparison of Data for Optical Transients of Gamma-Ray Bursts
The prompt information given by the GRB Coordinates Network (GCN) differs very much for different GRBs. We compare the optical magnitudes quoted in GCNs for some recent events. Our compilation might help in planning coordinated observations in the future.

  • Propagation of ionizing radiation in H II regions: The effects of optically thick density fluctuations
The accepted explanation of the observed dichotomy of two orders of magnitude between in situ measurements of electron density in H II regions, derived from emission line ratios, and average measurements based on integrated emission measure, is the inhomogeneity of the ionized medium. This is expressed as a ``filling factor", the volume ratio of
