  • z=1-3 ULIRGs from the Spitzer SWIRE survey (Berta+, 2007)
We present Keck/LRIS optical spectroscopy of 35 z>=1.4 luminous IR galaxies in the Spitzer Wide-area Infra-Red Extragalactic survey (SWIRE) northern fields (Lockman Hole, ELAIS-N1, ELAIS-N2). The primary targets belong to the "IR-peak" class of galaxies, having the 1.6{mu}m (restframe) stellar feature detected in the IRAC Spitzer channels. The

  • Zeeman diagnostics of solar magnetic fields
The next generation of space- and ground-based spectropolarimeters demands new diagnostic tools capable of fast (ideally real-time) and reliable interpretation of the Stokes data. This paper presents a critical review of the various techniques that can be used for Solar magnetometry, from traditional approaches, such as the magnetograph formula, to

  • ``Explosion'' and Intensification of Magnetic Flux Tubes
A magnetic flux tube anchored at the bottom of the solar convection zone and rising toward the surface as a result of an undulatory instability can be affected by a sudden catastrophic expansion and weakening of the magnetic field at its apex if the original field strength is below a few times 104 G. Such an "explosion" occurs if the flux tube

  • ϒ(nS) polarizations versus particle multiplicity in pp collisions at √{ s} = 7 TeV
The polarizations of the ϒ (1 S) , ϒ (2 S) , and ϒ (3 S) mesons are measured as a function of the charged particle multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at √{ s} = 7 TeV. The measurements are performed with a dimuon data sample collected in 2011 by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb-1. The results are

  • 1RXS J020929.0+283243 is a polar cataclysmic variable
We present simultaneous time-resolved photometry and spectroscopy of the eclipsing cataclysmic variable 1RXS J020929.0+283243 (ATel #652). Our data indicate that it is a new AM Herculis (i.e. polar) system. Unfiltered photometry (25-sec time resolution) was performed on 2005 November 8 UT at the 2.56-m Nordic Optical Telescope on La Palma. The
