  • Hanle Effect for Stellar Dipoles and Quadrupoles
We derive exact expressions for the degree of lineal polarization over a resolved or integrated stellar disc due to resonance scattering and the Hanle effect from a dipolar or quadrupolar distribution of magnetic fields. We apply the theory of scattering polarization within the formalism of the spherical tensors representation for the density

  • HD 172189: another step in furnishing one of the best laboratories known for asteroseismic studies
HD 172189 is a spectroscopic eclipsing binary system with a rapidly-rotating pulsating δ Scuti component. It is also a member of the open cluster IC 4756. These combined characteristics make it an excellent laboratory for asteroseismic studies. To date, HD 172189 has been analysed in detail photometrically but not spectroscopically. For this reason

  • Helioseismic evidence of two solar granulation timescales
The signature of two different scales of solar granulation in the power spectrum of disk integrated irradiance time series is presented. The fitted timescales for granulation (τGR1≈ 237~s and τGR2≈ 62~s) are in good agreement with the characteristic lifetimes derived from recent image time series of the Sun's surface (Del Moro 2004); and probably

  • HerMES: deep galaxy number counts from a P(D) fluctuation analysis of SPIRE Science Demonstration Phase observations
Dusty, star-forming galaxies contribute to a bright, currently unresolved cosmic far-infrared background. Deep Herschel-Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) images designed to detect and characterize the galaxies that comprise this background are highly confused, such that the bulk lies below the classical confusion limit. We analyse

  • HerMES: Herschel-SPIRE observations of Lyman break galaxies
We present first results of a study of the submillimetre (submm) (rest-frame far-infrared) properties of z ~ 3 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and their lower redshift counterparts BX/BM galaxies, based on Herschel-SPIRE observations of the Northern field of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS-N). We use stacking analysis to determine
