  • Thick discs in galaxies were most likely not accreted
The origin of thick discs in galaxies remains shrouded in mystery. A variety of formation scenarios has been proposed. Here we aim to test one such scenario where the thick disc stars are proposed to be accreted from satellite galaxies. In this scenario, in at least some galaxies a fraction of thick disc stars would rotate in a retrograde way

  • The Weakening Outburst of the Young Eruptive Star V582 Aur
V582 Aur is a pre-main-sequence FU Orionis type eruptive star, which entered a brightness minimum in 2016 March due to changes in the line-of-sight extinction. Here, we present and analyze new optical B, V, R C , and I C band multiepoch observations and new near-infrared J, H, and K S band photometric measurements from 2018 January–2019 February

  • The spatial distribution of Cyg OB2 from {it Gaia} DR2
A key difficulty in the study of Milky Way massive stars and OB associations has been the large uncertainty in their distances, hindering the comparison with theories of stellar and cluster evolution. The recent second release of data from the Gaia satellite has provided unprecedented high quality astrometry for more than 1.3 billion of objects

  • The shape of the ionised gas abundance distribution in spiral galaxies
In this contribution we review some of the most relevant results of the PhD thesis awarded with the XIV SEA PhD prize in 2018. The thesis is aimed at characterising the ionised gas abundance distribution in spiral galaxies by using two sets of high-quality integral field spectroscopic data from the CALIFA and AMUSING surveys. We observe that

  • The shape of the Galactic abundance gradient of oxygen from deep spectra of H II regions
We present results of an ongoing project dedicated to reassess the shape of the radial abundance gradient of O in the Milky Way based on deep spectroscopy of H II regions. Most of he data have been obtained with spectrographs attached to 8-10 m telescopes. The actual sample comprises 35 objects located at Galactocentric distances, R_{G}, from 5.1

  • The Proper-motion Field along the Magellanic Bridge: A New Probe of the LMC–SMC Interaction
We present the first detailed kinematic analysis of the proper motions (PMs) of stars in the Magellanic Bridge, from both the Gaia Data Release 2 catalog and from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys data. For the Gaia data, we identify and select two populations of stars in the Bridge region, young main-sequence (MS) and red
