Red giant masses and ages derived from carbon and nitrogen abundancesWe show that the masses of red giant stars can be well predicted from their photospheric carbon and nitrogen abundances, in conjunction with their spectroscopic stellar labels log g, Teff, and [Fe/H]. This is qualitatively expected from mass-dependent post-main-sequence evolution. We here establish an empirical relation between these quantities byMartig, M. et al.

Prospects for high-z cluster detections with Planck, based on a follow-up of 28 candidates using MegaCam at CFHTThe Planck catalogue of SZ sources limits itself to a significance threshold of 4.5 to ensure a low contamination rate by false cluster candidates. This means that only the most massive clusters at redshift z> 0.5, and in particular z> 0.7, are expected to enter into the catalogue, with a large number of systems in that redshift regime beingvan der Burg, R. Primary Black Hole Spin in OJ 287 as Determined by the General Relativity Centenary FlareOJ 287 is a quasi-periodic quasar with roughly 12 year optical cycles. It displays prominent outbursts that are predictable in a binary black hole model. The model predicted a major optical outburst in 2015 December. We found that the outburst did occur within the expected time range, peaking on 2015 December 5 at magnitude 12.9 in the optical RValtonen, M. J. et al.

Multiwavelength Study of Quiescent States of Mrk 421 with Unprecedented Hard X-Ray Coverage Provided by NuSTAR in 2013We present coordinated multiwavelength observations of the bright, nearby BL Lacertae object Mrk 421 taken in 2013 January–March, involving GASP-WEBT, Swift, NuSTAR, Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, VERITAS, and other collaborations and instruments, providing data from radio to very high energy (VHE) γ-ray bands. NuSTAR yielded previously unattainable sensitivityBaloković, M. et al.

Measurements of t t ¯ spin correlations and top quark polarization using dilepton final states in p p collisions at √{s }= 8 TeVMeasurements of the top quark-antiquark (t t ¯ ) spin correlations and the top quark polarization are presented for t t ¯ pairs produced in p p collisions at √{s }=8 TeV . The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb-1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using events with two oppositely chargedKhachatryan, V. et al.
