  • First OB-stars in the iron-poor local group galaxy Sextans A
Massive stars are crucial to understand the chemical and dynamical evolution of the Universe. Our knowledge of their physics at sub-SMC metallicities, dominant in the early Universe, is still in its infancy, due to the lack of proper observations and analyses. We have started a programme to observe stars in nearby galaxies with metallicities below

  • First light instrumentation for the Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre (OAJ)
The Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre (OAJ) is a new astronomical facility located at the Sierra de Javalambre (Teruel, Spain) whose primary role will be to conduct all-sky astronomical surveys. The main OAJ facilities are two wide-field telescopes: the JST/T250, a 2.55 m telescope with a 3° diameter FoV, and the JAST/T80, a 0.83 m telescope

  • First EURONEAR NEA discoveries from La Palma using the INT
Since 2006, the European Near Earth Asteroids Research (EURONEAR) project has been contributing to the research of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) within a European network. One of the main aims is the amelioration of the orbits of NEAs, and starting in 2014 February we focus on the recovery of one-opposition NEAs using the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT)

  • Exploring Anticorrelations and Light Element Variations in Northern Globular Clusters Observed by the APOGEE Survey
We investigate the light-element behavior of red giant stars in northern globular clusters (GCs) observed by the SDSS-III Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment. We derive abundances of 9 elements (Fe, C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, and Ti) for 428 red giant stars in 10 GCs. The intrinsic abundance range relative to measurement errors is

  • Evolutionary stellar population synthesis with MILES - II. Scaled-solar and α-enhanced models
We present models that predict spectra of old- and intermediate-aged stellar populations at 2.51 Å (FWHM) with varying [α/Fe] abundance. The models are based on the MILES library and on corrections from theoretical stellar spectra. The models employ recent [Mg/Fe] determinations for the MILES stars and BaSTI scaled-solar and α-enhanced isochrones

  • Estimating the magnetic field strength from magnetograms
A properly calibrated longitudinal magnetograph is an instrument that measures circular polarization and gives an estimation of the magnetic flux density in each observed resolution element. This usually constitutes a lower bound of the field strength in the resolution element, given that it can be made arbitrarily large as long as it occupies a
