  • An improved method for statistical studies of the internal kinematics of HII regions: the case of M83
We present the integrated Hα emission line profile for 157 HII regions in the central 3.4 × 3.4 arcmin2 of the galaxy M83 (NGC 5236). Using the Fabry-Perot interferometer GHαFAS, on the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope on La Palma, we show the importance of a good characterization of the instrumental response function for the study of line profile

  • Accurate Masses for the Primary and Secondary in the Eclipsing White Dwarf Binary NLTT 11748
We measure the radial velocity curve of the eclipsing detached white dwarf binary NLTT 11748. The primary exhibits velocity variations with a semi-amplitude of 273 km s-1 and an orbital period of 5.641 hr. We do not detect any spectral features from the secondary star or any spectral changes during the secondary eclipse. We use our composite

  • A study of catalogued nearby galaxy clusters in the SDSS-DR4. II. Cluster substructure
Context. According to the current cosmological paradigm, large scale structures form hierarchically in the Universe. Clusters of galaxies grow through a continuous accretion of mass, and the presence of cluster substructures can be interpreted as signature of this process. Nevertheless, the rate and manner of mass accretion events are still matters

  • A search for interstellar anthracene towards the Perseus anomalous microwave emission region
We report the discovery of a new broad interstellar (or circumstellar) band at 7088.8 +/- 2.0 Å coincident to within the measurement uncertainties with the strongest band of the anthracene cation (C14H10+) as measured in gas-phase laboratory spectroscopy at low temperatures. The band is detected in the line of sight of star Cernis 52, a likely

  • A fundamental plane for field star-forming galaxies
Context. Star formation rate (SFR), metallicity, and stellar mass are among the most important parameters of star-forming (SF) galaxies characterizing their formation and evolution. They are known to be related to each other both at low and high redshift in the mass-metallicity, mass-SFR, and metallicity-SFR relations. Aims: We demonstrate the
