  • Radial distribution of gas and dust in spiral galaxies . The case of M 99 (NGC 4254) and M 100 (NGC 4321)
By combining Herschel-SPIRE data with archival Spitzer, H i , and CO maps, we investigate the spatial distribution of gas and dust in the two famous grand-design spirals M 99 and M 100 in the Virgo cluster. Thanks to the unique resolution and sensitivity of the Herschel-SPIRE photometer, we are for the first time able to measure the distribution

  • QUIJOTE telescope design and fabrication
The QUIJOTE CMB experiment aims to characterize the polarization of the CMB in the frequency range 10-30 GHz and large angular scales. It will be installed in the Teide Observatory, following the projects that the Anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background group has developed in the past (Tenerife experiment, IAC-Bartol experiment...) and is

  • Proper Motions of Local Group Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies I: First Ground-Based Results for Fornax
In this article we present in detail the methodology and the first results of a ground-based program to determine the absolute proper motion of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The proper motion was determined using bona fide Fornax star members measured with respect to a fiducial at-rest background spectroscopically confirmed quasar, QSO J0240

  • Proper motion and apparent contraction in J0650+6001
We present a multi-epoch and multifrequency very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) study of the compact radio source J0650+6001. In VLBI images, the source is resolved into three components. The central component shows a flat spectrum, suggesting the presence of the core, while the two outer regions, with a steeper spectral index, display a

  • Probing the molecular interstellar medium of M82 with Herschel-SPIRE spectroscopy
We present the observations of the starburst galaxy M82 taken with the Herschel SPIRE Fourier-transform spectrometer. The spectrum (194-671 μm) shows a prominent CO rotational ladder from J = 4-3 to 13-12 emitted by the central region of M82. The fundamental properties of the gas are well constrained by the high J lines observed for the first time

  • Predicted x-ray backgrounds for the International X-ray Observatory
The background that will be observed by IXO's X-ray detectors naturally separates into two components: (1) a Cosmic X-ray Background (CXB), primarily due to unresolved point sources at high energies (E>2 keV), along with Galactic component(s) at lower energies that are generated in the disk and halo as well as the Local Bubble and charge exchange
