  • Galactic Bulges from Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS Observations: Global Scaling Relations
We investigate bulge and disk scaling relations using a volume-corrected sample of early- to intermediate-type disk galaxies in which, importantly, the biasing flux from additional nuclear components has been modeled and removed. Structural parameters are obtained from a seeing-convolved, bulge + disk + nuclear-component decomposition applied to

  • Galactic Bulges from Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS Observations: Central Galaxian Objects, and Nuclear Profile Slopes
We have measured the central structural properties for a sample of S0-Sbc galaxies down to scales of ~10 pc using Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS images. Central star clusters are found in 58% of our sample. Their near-infrared luminosities scale with the host bulge luminosities, as reported in 2003 by Balcells and coworkers. In terms of photometric

  • Evolution of Structure in Spiral Galaxies with GHAFAS
We report the arrival of a new Fabry-Perot interferometer, GHAFAS, which will be mounted at the Nasmyth focus of the 4.2 meter William Herschel Telescope on La Palma in July 2007. Using modern technology, with a spectral resolution of the order R>20000, and with a seeing limited spatial resolution, GHAFAS will provide a new look at the H-alpha

  • Evidence for a jet contribution to the optical/infrared light of neutron star X-ray binaries
Optical/near-infrared (optical/NIR, OIR) light from low-mass neutron star X-ray binaries (NSXBs) in outburst is traditionally thought to be thermal emission from the accretion disc. Here we present a comprehensive collection of quasi-simultaneous OIR and X-ray data from 19 low magnetic field NSXBs, including new observations of three sources: 4U

  • Eight new T4.5-T7.5 dwarfs discovered in the UKIDSS Large Area Survey Data Release 1
We present eight new T4.5-T7.5 dwarfs identified in the UKIRT (United Kingdom Infrared Telescope) Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS) Data Release 1 (DR1). In addition we have recovered the T4.5 dwarf SDSSJ020742.91+000056.2 and the T8.5 dwarf ULASJ003402.77-005206.7. Photometric candidates were picked up in two-colour

  • Echoes from the companion star in Sco X-1
We present simultaneous X-ray (RXTE) and optical (ULTRACAM) narrow-band (Bowen blend/HeII and nearby continuum) observations of Sco X-1 at 2-10 Hz time resolution. We find that the Bowen/HeII emission lags the X-ray light curves with a light traveltime of s which is consistent with reprocessing in the companion star. The echo from the donor is
