  • New members in the Upper Scorpius association from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Early Data Release†
We present the results of a 9.3-deg2 infrared (ZYJHK) survey in the Upper Scorpius association extracted from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Galactic Cluster Survey Early Data Release. We have selected a total of 112 candidates from the (Z - J,Z) colour-magnitude diagram over the Z = 12.5-20.5 magnitude range, corresponding to M = 0.25

  • Near-IR variability properties of a selected sample of AGB stars
We present the results of a near-infrared monitoring programme of a selected sample of stars, initially suspected to be Mira variables and OH/IR stars, covering more than a decade of observations. The objects monitored cover the typical range of IRAS colours shown by O-rich stars on the asymptotic giant branch and show a surprisingly large

  • Fundamental parameters and abundances of metal-poor stars: the SDSS standard BD +17 4708
The atmospheric parameters and iron abundance of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectrophotometric standard star BD +17 4708 are critically examined using up-to-date Kurucz model atmospheres, LTE line formation calculations, and reliable atomic data. We find Teff=6141 ± 50 K, log g=3.87 ± 0.08, and [Fe/H]=-1.74 ± 0.09. The line-of-sight

  • Fourier Dissection of Early-Type Galaxy Bars
This paper reports on a near-infrared survey of early-type galaxies designed to provide information on bar strengths, bulges, disks, and bar parameters in a statistically well-defined sample of S0-Sa galaxies. Early-type galaxies have the advantage that their bars are relatively free of the effects of dust, star formation, and spiral structure that

  • Extremely compact massive galaxies at z ~ 1.4
The optical rest-frame sizes of 10 of the most massive (~5 × 1011h-270Msolar) galaxies found in the near-infrared MUNICS survey at 1.2 z 1.7 are analysed. Sizes are estimated in both the J and K' filters. These massive galaxies are at least a factor of 4+1.9-1.0 (+/-1σ) smaller in the rest-frame V-band than local counterparts of the same stellar

  • Dynamics of Anisotropic Universes
We present a general study of the dynamical properties of Anisotropic Bianchi Universes in the context of Einstein General Relativity. Integrability results using Kovalevskaya exponents are reported and connected to general knowledge about Bianchi dynamics. Finally, dynamics toward singularity in Bianchi type VIII and IX universes are showed to be
