  • Nova in M31
We report the discovery of a possible nova in M31 on a R band CCD image at JD 2453877.5 (2006, May 22.1 UT) with 18.7 mag (accuracy 0.1 mag). The image was obtained with the Wendelstein telescope (0.8 m, 1k x 1k CCD camera with 24mu sq. pixels). The position obtained for the nova candidate is RA(2000) = 00h 43m 11.81s, Dec(2000) = +41° 13' 44.7"

  • Multiplicity of very low-mass objects in the Upper Scorpius OB association: a possible wide binary population
Aims.Properties of multiplicity, such as the multiplicity frequency, the distribution of mass ratios and periods, provide important informations on the formation processes at work. Studying these properties in different environments and at different ages allows us to constrain the models of formation and to understand the influence of the

  • Moving magnetic tubes: fragmentation, vortex streets and the limit of the approximation of thin flux tubes
Aims.We study the buoyant rise of magnetic flux tubes in a stratified layer over a range of Reynolds numbers (25 ⪉ Re ⪉ 2600) by means of numerical simulations. Special emphasis is placed on studying the fragmentation of the rising tube, its trailing wake and the formation of a vortex street in the high-Reynolds number regime. Furthermore, we

  • Massive Star Clusters
We are on the cusp of a revolution in massive star research triggered by 2MASS and Spitzer/GLIMPSE, and now is the ideal time to capitalize on these projects by performing the first survey of massive stars in young stellar clusters throughout the Galactic plane. A search of the 2MASS survey has produced over 450 newly-identified massive stellar

  • Magnetic flux in the inter-network quiet Sun from comparison with numerical simulations
Khomenko et al. estimate the mean magnetic field strength of the quiet Sun to be 20 G. The figure is smaller than several existing estimates, and it comes from the comparison between observed Zeeman polarization signals and synthetic signals from numerical simulations of magneto-convection. The numerical simulations require an artificially large

  • Joint LIGO and TAMA300 search for gravitational waves from inspiralling neutron star binaries
We search for coincident gravitational wave signals from inspiralling neutron star binaries using LIGO and TAMA300 data taken during early 2003. Using a simple trigger exchange method, we perform an intercollaboration coincidence search during times when TAMA300 and only one of the LIGO sites were operational. We find no evidence of any
