  • Encounters between spherical galaxies - I. Systems without a dark halo
We report here on a survey of N-body simulations of encounters between spherical galaxies. Initial systems are isotropic Jaffe models. Different sets of mass ratios, impact parameters and orbital energies are studied. Both merger remnants and systems perturbed after a non-merging encounter are analysed and compared to real-life elliptical galaxies

  • Effects of photon escape on diagnostic diagrams for H II regions
In this article we first outline the mounting evidence that a significant fraction of the ionizing photons emitted by OB stars within H ii regions escape from their immediate surroundings, i.e from what is normally defined as the H ii region, and explain how an H ii region structure containing high density contrast inhomogeneities facilitates this

  • Discovery of a widely separated binary system of very low mass stars
We report our discovery of a nearby wide binary system, LP 714-37 AB. Phan-Bao et al. identified LP 714-37 as a mid-M dwarf during a cross-identification of the NLTT and DENIS catalogues. Our CCD images resolve the system into a binary with a projected angular separation of 1.8´´, or 33 AU, and low-resolution optical spectra give spectral types of

  • CCD photometry of 23 minor planets
We present CCD photometric observations of 23 main-belt asteroids, of which 8 have never been observed before; thus, the data of these objects are the first in the literature. The majority showed well-detectable light variations, exceeding 0.1. We have determined synodic periods for 756 Lilliana (9.36), 1270 Datura (3.4), 1400 Tirela (13.36), 1503

  • APE: the Active Phasing Experiment to test new control system and phasing technology for a European Extremely Large Optical Telescope
The future European Extremely Large Telescope will be composed of one or two giant segmented mirrors (up to 100 m of diameter) and of several large monolithic mirrors (up to 8 m in diameter). To limit the aberrations due to misalignments and defective surface quality it is necessary to have a proper active optics system. This active optics system

  • An artificial neural network approach to the solution of molecular chemical equilibrium
A novel approach is presented for the solution of instantaneous chemical equilibrium problems. The chemical equilibrium can be considered, due to its intrinsically local character, as a mapping of the three-dimensional parameter space spanned by the temperature, hydrogen density and electron density into many one-dimensional spaces representing the
