  • The ionized gas in and around the Wolf-Rayet galaxy NGC 1741
Interaction can be the main mechanism that triggers star formation in Wolf-Rayet galaxies. The compact group HCG 31 has one of this objects, NGC 1741. We present new observations of this compact interacting group, in order to analyse the physical conditions and chemical composition of the ionized gas, as well as to estimate the ages of the

  • The instrumental design of Elmer
ELMER is a visible imager spectrograph currently scheduled to be in operation at the GTC on Day One. This paper covers engineering aspects of the instrument and summarizes five poster contributions presented at this conference. ELMER is an instrument managed directly by the GTC Project Office, which has developed the preliminary design and large

  • The influence of hyperfine structure on some manganese line profiles in the solar spectrum
Taking into account effects of hyperfine structure, we calculated the synthetic solar spectrum for wavelength intervals around nine neutral manganese lines. To estimate values of hyperfine components we used the Oxford total absorption oscillator strength measurements (Booth et al. 1983). We compared observed profiles (Photometric Atlas of the

  • The Impact of Starbursts in the Halos of Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies (A Proposal for OSIRIS)
We propose to perform deep narrow band imaging in several emission lines of interest for a sample of blue compact dwarf galaxies at the GTC, with the OSIRIS facility in tunable filter mode. From the emission line maps, we will determine the physical properties of the diffuse ionized gas and disentangle the nature of the ionizing source.

  • The GTC: Status and Operation Plans
The Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), a 10 meter segmented-mirror telescope, now at an advanced stage of construction on La Palma (Spain), will shortly be entering its integration phase. First light is planned for the second half of 2003, with science operations scheduled for the end of 2004. This represents a small delay against the originally
