  • Discovery and characterization of the exoplanets WASP-148b and c. A transiting system with two interacting giant planets
We present the discovery and characterization of WASP-148, a new extrasolar system that includes at least two giant planets. The host star is a slowly rotating inactive late-G dwarf with a V = 12 magnitude. The planet WASP-148b is a hot Jupiter of 0.72 R Jup and 0.29 M Jup that transits its host with an orbital period of 8.80 days. We found the

  • Determining the dynamics and magnetic fields in He I 10830 Å during a solar filament eruption
Aims: We investigate the dynamics and magnetic properties of the plasma, including the line-of-sight velocity (LOS) and optical depth, as well as the vertical and horizontal magnetic fields, belonging to an erupted solar filament. Methods: The filament eruption was observed with the GREGOR Infrared Spectrograph at the 1.5-meter GREGOR telescope on

  • Detection of young (≤20 Myr) stellar populations in apparently quenched low-mass galaxies using red spectral line indices
We report on the detection of a small contribution (around and below 1 per cent in mass) from young stellar components with ages ≤20 Myr in low-mass galaxies purposely selected from the MaNGA survey to be already-quenched systems. Among the sample of 28 galaxies, 8 of them show signatures of having suffered a very recent burst of star formation

  • Confirming new white dwarf-ultracool dwarf binary candidates
We present the results of a study to discover prospective new white dwarf-L dwarf binaries as identified by their near-infrared excesses in the UKIDSS catalogue. We obtained optical spectra to validate the white dwarf nature for 22 of the candidate primary stars, confirming ten as white dwarfs and determining their effective temperatures and

  • Abell 30 - A binary central star among the born-again planetary nebulae
Eight planetary nebulae have been identified as 'born-again', a class of object typified by knotty secondary ejecta having low masses (${\sim}10^{-4}$ M ☉) with nearly no hydrogen. Abell 30, the archetype of the class, also belongs to a small subset of planetary nebulae that exhibit extreme abundance discrepancy factors (where Abell 30 is the most
