  • A test for asymptotic giant branch evolution theories: planetary nebulae in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We used a new generation of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stellar models that include dust formation in the stellar winds to find the links between evolutionary models and the observed properties of a homogeneous sample of Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) planetary nebulae (PNe). Comparison between the evolutionary yields of elements such as CNO and

  • A three-dimensional Galactic extinction model

A large-scale three-dimensional model of Galactic extinction is presented based on the Galactic dust distribution model of citet{DS01}. The extinction AV to any point within the Galactic disk can be quickly deduced using a set of three-dimensional Cartesian grids. Extinctions from the model are compared to empirical extinction measures, including

  • A Two-Micron Galactic Survey

The first results are presented here of the Two-Micron Galactic Survey (TMGS). The TMGS is the most sensitive near-infrared survey of the Galactic plane yet attempted on a large scale. The Galactic plane has been drift-scanned in several regions over the areas -5° < l < 30°, |b| ≤ 15° and 30° < l < 180°, |b| ≤ 5°. The discussion in this paper

  • A Variable Mid-infrared Synchrotron Break Associated with the Compact Jet in GX 339-4

Many X-ray binaries remain undetected in the mid-infrared, a regime where emission from their compact jets is likely to dominate. Here, we report the detection of the black hole binary GX 339-4 with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) during a very bright, hard accretion state in 2010. Combined with a rich contemporaneous multiwavelength

  • A Very Small Array search for the extended Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in the Corona Borealis supercluster

We present interferometric imaging at 33 GHz of the Corona Borealis supercluster, using the extended configuration of the Very Small Array. A total area of 24 deg2 has been imaged, with an angular resolution of 11 arcmin and a sensitivity of 12 mJy beam-1. The aim of these observations is to search for Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) detections from known

  • Absence of anti-correlations and of baryon acoustic oscillations in the galaxy correlation function from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 7

Aims: One of the most striking features predicted by standard models of galaxy formation is the presence of anti-correlations in the matter distribution on large enough scales (r > r_c). Simple arguments show that the location of the length scale r_c, marking the transition from positive to negative correlations, is the same for any class of
