  • Optical detection of meteoroidal impacts on the Moon
Impacts of meteoroids on the Moon should cause detectable optical flashes, but the population of objects that are big enough is very low, and hitherto no unambiguous impact flashes have been recorded. The flux of meteoroids associated with the Leonid meteor shower of 18 November 1999 was predicted to produce observable flashes on the night side of

  • DENIS Catalogue toward Magellanic Clouds (DCMC) (Cioni+ 2000)
This is the first version of a complete near-IR point source catalogue towards the Magellanic Clouds extracted from the data obtained with the DEep Near Infraread Survey of the Southern Sky (DENIS). The catalogue covers an area of 19.87x16 square degrees centered on (05:27:20-69:00:00) for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and 14.7x10 square

  • Turmoil on the accretion disk of GRO J1655-40
During the 1996/1997 outburst of the X-ray transient GRO J1655-40 the Wide Field Cameras onboard BeppoSAX observed the system with nearly continuous coverage during some stages of this outburst. On two occasions we find clear evidence for frequent dipping behaviour, characterized by several absorption dips occurring within one binary orbit. However

  • Discovery of a very luminous megamaser during a radio flare in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348
We report the detection of a new H_2O megamaser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348 with the MPIfR 100 m telescope in Effelsberg. With an apparent isotropic luminosity of L_H_2O =~ 420L_sun the maser is the third most luminous maser discovered so far. The detected line is unusually broad (Delta v =~ 130 km s-1), is redshifted by ~ 130 km s-1 from the
