  • 3D simulations identifying the effects of varying the twist and field strength of an emerging flux tube

Aims.We investigate the effects of varying the magnetic field strength and the twist of a flux tube as it rises through the solar interior and emerges into the atmosphere. Methods: .Using a 3D numerical MHD code, we consider a simple stratified model, comprising of one solar interior layer and three overlying atmospheric layers. We set a horizontal

  • A bar signature and central disc in the gaseous and stellar velocity fields of NGC 5448

We analyse Spectrographic Areal Unit for Research on Optical Nebulae (SAURON) kinematic maps of the inner kiloparsec of the early-type (Sa) barred spiral galaxy NGC 5448. The observed morphology and kinematics of the emission-line gas is patchy and perturbed, indicating clear departures from circular motion. The kinematics of the stars is more

  • A Black Hole in the Superluminal source SAX J1819.3-2525 (V4641 Sgr

Spectroscopic observations of the fast X-ray transient and superluminal jet source SAX J1819.3-2525 (V4641 Sgr) reveal a best fitting period of P spect=2.81678+/- 0.00056 days and a semiamplitude of K2=211.0+/- 3.1 km s-1. The optical mass function is f(M)=2.74+/- 0.12 Msun. We find a photometric period of P photo=2.81730 +/- 0.00001 days using a

  • A Black Hole in XTE J1118+480

Spectroscopic observations of this X-ray nova with the new 6.5-m MMT on Dec. 1 & 4 show that it contains a black hole primary of at least 6 solar masses. Our prior photometric observations using the FLWO 1.2-m telescope showed that the X-ray nova was near its pre-outburst brightness (IAUC 7390) at V = 18.8 on Oct. 26.

  • A calibrated Hα flux map of M33: HII region luminosity function, and recombination emission from the warm ionised medium

We have used a flux-calibrated mosaiced CCD image of M33 in Hα emission to produce a catalogue of the positions and Hα luminosities of 9190 HII regions complete down to a limiting luminosity LHα of 1036 erg/s and constructed a luminosity function (LF) from this catalogue. In contrast to previously published M33 LFs we find the slope of the function

  • A Catalog of li Abundances and Equivalent Widths in a Sample of Galactic C-Stars

In the first two papers of this series, we derived and discussed the abundances of lithium in a sample of 161 galactic carbon stars. Here, we extend this sample to 203 stars and we present the spectra from which these abundances were derived, as well as a tabulation of the equivalent widths of the λ6708 Å feature. A comparison of our measurements
