Description

2019 marks half a century of the first doctoral thesis in astrophysics in Spain made with data acquired from the Observatories of the Canary Islands. Since then, about 350 doctoral theses have been defended at the University of La Laguna, this being one of the best testimonies of the consolidation of Spanish Astrophysics, the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands and its two observatories (the Teide Observatory and the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory) as reference points worldwide in Astrophysics.

The objective of this congress is to commemorate this milestone, and at the same time review in a general way the main results of these doctoral theses, situating them in the scientific context in which they were developed, analyzing the impact they had at the time, as well as in the evolution back of the field. Likewise, it is intended to review the subsequent professional development of its authors, regardless of whether this occurred within or outside the field in which the thesis was developed.

All the talks will be invited and will cover the main fields in which the scientific activity of the doctorates has been developed in the ULL-IAC. However, all those researchers who presented their doctoral thesis in the context of the ULL-IAC are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussions and debates that will surely arise not only because of the talks, but also in discussions informal
