Description

In the last two decades, Spain has built up and consolidated a strong infrared community that has successfully contributed to the construction and scientific exploitation of basically all European space instruments in this energy range. The IAC has contributed to the construction of infrared instruments for the space telescopes ISO (ISOPHOT-S) and Herschel (PACS and SPIRE), has participated in legacy surveys of Spitzer and Herschel and since 2004 in the design of the SPICA mission. Given the high participation and involvement of Spain in SPICA, at Co-PI level, we have been invited by the PI of the NASA PRIMA mission proposal and the PI of the European instrument PRIMAger to participate in this mission. The proposed project combines the Spanish expertise (CAB, IGN, DICOM, IMDEA, IAC, and UAH) in the development of cryogenic instrumentation (down to mK), developed in the context of the SPICA mission, with the scientific expertise on the exploitation of mm/submm/far-IR/mid-IR facilities to guarantee the Spanish involvement in the design and development of the PRIMA mission, the next IR mission to be submitted to the call for Probe missions in NASA's Astrophysics Probe Explorer Program (APEX).

The coordinated project will undertake the technological and scientific challenge to contribute with state-of-the art cryogenic components such as low noise amplifiers, the development of a KIDs-based camera and participate in the mechanical structure of the instruments of the PRIMA mission. The IAC subproject will support these developments and contribute to maximize the scientific return of current IR missions through the multiwavelength scientific exploitation from the UV to optical and near/mid/fir data, including JWST, combined with followup programs of different facilities such as ALMA and GTC. Finally, we will consolidate a similar scientific leadership to that achieved in SPICA by actively participating in the definition of the PRIMA science cases.

The IAC subproject requests the necessary funding to carry out the following studies:

1) JWST follow-up studies of Herschel high-redshift galaxies.

2) ALMA follow-up of high-redshift quasars.

3) UV- and Lyman alpha extremely luminous galaxies.

4) Gravitationally-lensed supernovae.

and

5) Superluminous supernovae: discovery, spectroscopy, and polarimetry:

These projects are closely related with many of the science cases of the PRIMA extragalactic surveys and will help optimize the PRIMA mission and science plans.
