The TANNHAUSER project is a public-private collaboration initiative in which the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) participates as a collaborating partner.
Its main objective is to develop and integrate an advanced optical communications system into the Nasmyth platform of the Two-meter Twin Telescope (TTT), located at the Teide Observatory in the Canary Islands.
Optical communications are emerging as a key solution for data transmission in space, due to their high efficiency and low latency compared to traditional radio frequency systems. The implementation of an optical communications system at the TTT will make it possible to establish high-precision optical links with satellites in LEO, MEO and GEO orbits, with future capacity for operations in cislunar space and interplanetary missions and, therefore, consolidate the Canary Islands as a reference centre in space telecommunications technologies, taking advantage of its privileged location and the optimal atmospheric conditions of the Teide Observatory.
