  • The dynamic magnetic quiet Sun: physical mechanisms and UV signature
The changes in the Sun occurring at human time-scales can be pinned down to the presence of magnetic fields. These fields determine the structure of the outer solar atmosphere and, therefore, they are responsible for all the energetic part of the solar spectrum, including the UV. Our understanding of the magnetic fields existing at the base of the

  • The ACS Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters. VII. Relative Ages
The ACS Survey of Galactic globular clusters is a Hubble Space Telescope Treasury program designed to provide a new large, deep, and homogeneous photometric database. Based on observations from this program, we have measured precise relative ages for a sample of 64 Galactic globular clusters by comparing the relative position of the clusters' main

  • Synthesis of polyphenylacetylene by radiation-induced polymerization in deoxycholic acid clathrate
Phenylacetylene was polymerized as inclusion compound (clathrate) inside deoxycholic acid (DOCA) crystals. The polymerization was initiated by γ radiation and a total dose of 320 kGy was employed. The resulting polyphenylacetylene (PPA) was isolated by dissolution of deoxycholic acid in boiling ethanol. PPA high polymer was accompanied by a series

  • Structures in the dust coma of comet C/1999 T1 (McNaught-Hartley) from Jan. 26 to Feb. 05, 2001
Aims: An in depth analysis of the images acquired in broad-band optical and infrared observations in the R, I, and J, H, Ks bands of comet C/199T1 (McNaught-Hartley) acquired from Jan. 26 to Feb. 05, 2001 has been performed and is presented here. Methods: Beside the Laplace filtering technique applied to enhance structures in the dust coma of the

  • Stability of C60 and C70 fullerenes toward corpuscular and γ radiation
The stability of C60 and C70 fullerenes in the interstellar medium deposited on dust surface or embedded in meteorites and comets has been simulated with γ irradiation and with He+ ion bombardment. It is shown by vibrational spectroscopy that a γ radiation dose of 2.6MGy (1Gy = 1 joule absorbed energy per kilogram) causes partial oligomerization of

  • Simulations of magneto-hydrodynamic waves in atmospheres of roAp stars
We report 2D time-dependent non-linear magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of waves in the atmospheres of roAp stars. We explore a grid of simulations in a wide parameter space. The aim of our study is to understand the influence of the atmosphere and the magnetic field on the propagation and reflection properties of magneto-acoustic waves
