  • VLT-FLAMES survey of massive stars (Evans+, 2005)
Astrometry and photometry for our target fields were acquired from observations for the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) that used the Wide Field Imager (WFI) at the 2.2-m MPG/ESO telescope. The brightest targets in NGC 3293 and NGC 4755 were observed using FEROS at the ESO/MPG 2.2-m telescope on 2004 July 4-6. (4 data files).

  • Tropospheric wind regimes and site topography effects: importance for site characterization
Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM) at La Palma (Canary Islands) is one of the two top sites selected for hosting the future European Large Telescope (ELT) (http://www.eso.org/projects/e-elt/), the other being Paranal (in Chile). Meteorological and seeing conditions are crucial for the site selection. New concepts related to geophysical

  • Toward a clean sample of ultra-luminous X-ray sources
Context: .Observational follow-up programmes for the characterization of ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) require the construction of clean samples of such sources in which the contamination by foreground/background sources is minimum. Aims: .We calculate the degree of foreground/background contaminants among the ULX sample candidates in a

  • Three-dimensional Plasmoid Evolution in the Solar Atmosphere
We present clear evidence of the formation of three-dimensional (3D) plasmoids in the current sheet between two magnetic flux systems in a 3D numerical experiment of flux emergence into the solar atmosphere and study their properties and time evolution. Plasmoids are most likely the result of resistive tearing mode instabilities. They adopt the

  • Thermal modeling of cooled instrument: from the WIRCam IR camera to CCD Peltier cooled compact packages
In the past decade, new thermal modelling tools have been offered to system designers. These modelling tools have rarely been used for the cooled instruments in ground-based astronomy. In addition to an overwhelming increase of PC computer capabilities, these tools are now mature enough to drive the design of complex astronomical instruments that
