    The Local Group as a benchmark for Galaxy Evolution, on IAC Winter School

    La XXXIV Canary Islands Winter School of Astrophysics, organizada por el Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) y la Universidad de La Laguna (ULL), tendrá lugar entre los días 8 y 15 de noviembre. En esta edición, cerca de 60 estudiantes de 15 países se reunirán para conocer los últimos avances en el campo de la evolución de galaxias, con el Grupo Local como punto de referencia. Durante una semana, el edificio IACTEC, en el Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Tenerife (La Laguna), acogerá a 60 estudiantes de máster, doctorado y postdoctorado para nutrirse sobre las novedades del panorama

    The WEAVE spectrograph on the William Herschel Telescope takes its first light data at the ORM

    The Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes (ING) and the WEAVE instrument team present the first observations with this new instrument. This is a powerful latest generation multi-fibre spectrograph which, in synergy with the Gaia satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA), will be used to obtain spectra of several million stars in the disc and the halo of our Galaxy, permitting in-depth “archaeology” of the Milky Way. In addition, other galaxies, both nearby and distant, will be studied, some of them detected by the LOFAR radio telescope, in order to get to know their evolution. WEAVE, on the

    The synchronized dance of the Magellanic Clouds star formation history

    According to the current theories of galaxy formation, these generally form as small entities that grow through fusion, collision and accretion, eventually becoming the majestic galaxies that we observe nowadays. As an example of such process we can mention our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Around it we can find tens of dwarf galaxies and even stellar “streams” formed by already dissolved systems. We have focused in the study of our two most prominent satellite galaxies, the Magellanic Clouds, a system in the process of falling towards our Galaxy, whilst also having a mutual interaction.
