  • Supersonic Line Broadening and the Gas Dynamical Evolution of Giant HII Regions
We have analyzed high spatial and spectral resolution Hα emission-line TAURUS data on two nearby giant H II regions, NGC 604 and NGC 588. Previous work shows that while NGC 604 is a relatively young system whose emission line kinematics is due to a combination of gravity and stellar wind-blown shells, NGC 588 seems more evolved, with its ionized

  • Supersonic Motions in Giant H II Regions: Handling 3D Data with Matador
Bidimensional spectroscopy with good spatial and spectral resolution, sampling a particular emission line over the whole emitting area, is shown here to be the most suitable observational technique for understanding the kinematics of giant extragalactic H II regions (GEHRs). The TAURUS II Fabry-Perot spectrograph is an excellent instrument for this

  • Surface Brightness and Stellar Populations at the Outer Edge of the Large Magellanic Cloud: No Stellar Halo Yet
We present a high-quality color-magnitude diagram (CMD) for a 36'×36' field located 8° (~=7 kpc) from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) center, as well as a precise determination of the LMC surface brightness derived from the resolved stellar population out to this large galactocentric radius. This deep CMD shows for the first time the detailed age

  • Surface organization of homoepitaxial InP films grown by metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy
We present a systematic study of the morphology of homoepitaxial InP films grown by metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy which are imaged with ex situ atomic force microscopy. These films show a dramatic range of different surface morphologies as a function of the growth conditions and substrate (growth temperature, V/III ratio, and miscut angle

  • Survival of the obscuring torus in the most powerful active galactic nuclei
Dedicated searches suggest that the fraction of obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) decreases substantially with increasing luminosity. To explain these findings receding torus models have often been adopted. We have determined the intrinsic fraction of optical type-2 AGN at z

  • Suzaku and Multi-Wavelength Observations of OJ 287 during the Periodic Optical Outburst in 2007
Suzaku observations of the blazar OJ 287 were performed in 2007 April 10-13 and November 7-9. They correspond to a quiescent and a flaring state, respectively. The X-ray spectra of the source can be well-described with single power-law models in both exposures. The derived X-ray photon index and the flux density at 1 keV were found to be Γ = 1.65±0
