  • Investigation of the role of the projectile-target orientation angles on the evaporation residue production
The measured yield of evaporation residues in reactions with massive nuclei have been well reproduced by using the partial fusion and quasifission cross sections obtained in the dinuclear-system model. The influence of the orientation angles of the projectile- and target-nucleus symmetry axes relative to the beam direction on the production of the

  • Ionized gas diagnostics from protoplanetary discs in the Orion nebula and the abundance discrepancy problem
We present results from integral field spectroscopy of a field located near the Trapezium Cluster using the Potsdam Multi-Aperture Spectrophotometer (PMAS). The observed field contains a variety of morphological structures: five externally ionized protoplanetary discs (also known as proplyds), the high-velocity jet HH 514 and a bowshock. Spatial

  • IPHAS J062746.41+014811.3: A Deeply Eclipsing Intermediate Polar
We present time-resolved photometry of a cataclysmic variable discovered in the Isaac Newton Telescope Photometric Hα Survey of the northern galactic plane, IPHAS J062746.41+014811.3, and classify the system as the fourth deeply eclipsing intermediate polar known with an orbital period of P orb = 8.16 hr and a spin period of P spin = 2210 s. • IRAS 17423-1755: a massive post-AGB star evolving into the planetary nebula stage?
IRAS 17423-1755 has been recognized as a new bipolar nebula during a multi-wavelength observational program of unidentified IRAS sources with far infrared colours similar to those of known planetary nebulae. B, V, R and Hα CCD images show a clearly marked bipolar structure with a total extension of ~11 arcsec. The spectrum of the core shows strong

  • Iron Depletion in Ionized Nebulae of the Large Magellanic Cloud
We present here preliminary results of an analysis of the iron abundance in the ionized gas of three planetary nebulae and one H II region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). These results are compared with the ones we obtain for a sample of Galactic and extragalactic nebulae. We find that the amounts of iron depletion into dust grains in LMC

  • Is Open Access Right for Astronomy?
The underlying ethos of Open Access is that the public should have the right to free access to the published results of all publicly funded academic and scientific research. Such has been the political success of OA campaigners that some funding agencies (e.g. Wellcome) now make OA publication of funded research a necessary condition for the award
